India’s young batting prospect Vaibhav Suryavanshi found himself in the spotlight following an on-field altercation with Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage during a recent India A vs Sri Lanka A match in Dambulla. The incident, which gained significant attention on social media, prompted questions about whether the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would take disciplinary action.
However, BCCI has decided not to proceed with any action against the youngster.
BCCI Will Not Take Action Against Vaibhav Suryavanshi
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified the board’s stance on the matter, emphasizing that the focus should remain on the tournament rather than off-field distractions.
Speaking to Sportstar, Saikia said that the board wants players to concentrate on their cricket and does not wish to divert their attention with issues unrelated to their performance on the field.
His comments indicate that the board does not view the incident as serious enough to warrant disciplinary measures against the young batter.
What Happened During the Match?
The controversy emerged after a closely contested India A vs Sri Lanka A encounter that was decided in a Super Over.
Sri Lanka A posted 16 runs in the Super Over, leaving India A with a target of 17. The Indian side managed only 9 runs, falling short of victory.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge carried the responsibility of chasing the target, but they were unable to take the team across the line. Suryavanshi scored 6 runs off the final three deliveries of the Super Over, though it was not enough to secure a win.
How the Altercation Escalated
According to reports, tensions rose after the match when Indian players were walking back while Sri Lanka A players celebrated their victory.
As per a Cricbuzz report, Vishen Halambage allegedly told Suryavanshi, “The match is over, now go home.” The remark reportedly upset the Indian batter, who turned back toward the Sri Lankan player, leading to a heated exchange.
The situation escalated to the point where Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella had to intervene and separate the players. A video of the incident quickly went viral across social media platforms.
Sri Lanka Cricket Takes Action Against Halambage
While BCCI has opted not to penalize Suryavanshi, Sri Lanka Cricket has reportedly taken action against Vishen Halambage.
According to media reports, match referee Pradeep Jayaprakash reviewed the umpires’ reports and imposed a fine on the Sri Lankan player. No formal disciplinary hearing was considered necessary, with the decision reportedly based on the available match reports.
However, Sri Lanka Cricket has not publicly disclosed the exact reason for the penalty or the amount of the fine.
