New Delhi: In a monumental stride for Indian infrastructure and connectivity, the world’s highest railway bridge, the Chenab Bridge, is slated for inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, 2025.

Union Minister for Department of Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, announced this landmark event, emphasising the bridge’s significance. He highlighted that the bridge is a pivotal component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project in Jammu and Kashmir, which will finally connect the Kashmir Valley directly with the rest of India by rail.

“History in the making… Just 3 days to go! The mighty Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, stands tall in Jammu and Kashmir. Part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL). Built to withstand nature’s toughest tests. PM Modi to inaugurate the #ChenabBridge on 6th June, 2025. A proud symbol of New India’s strength and vision!” Singh posted on X.

Situated in the challenging terrain of the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, the iconic Chenab Railway Bridge is an engineering marvel that soars an astounding 359 meters (over 1,177 feet) above the riverbed. This makes it taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The construction of this arch bridge, part of the ambitious Katra-to-Sangaldan stretch, presented numerous engineering and logistical hurdles due to the region’s difficult topography and seismic sensitivity. However, years of meticulous work and cutting-edge technology have resulted in a structure capable of withstanding winds blowing at speeds greater than 250 kilometers per hour.

“If I talk about its features: its height is 359 meters, which is even more than that of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Secondly, this bridge is the world’s highest railway arch bridge. Thirdly, this bridge is capable of withstanding winds blowing at speeds greater than 250 kilometres per hour,” an official who was involved in the bridge construction told news agency ANI.
