New Delhi: In a horrifying turn of events, a 20-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by ten people in the Gopalpur sea beach in the Ganjam district of Odisha late Sunday night.
The group of men forcibly stopped the pair before sexually assaulting the woman. According to the news reports in Indian Today and News18, the woman, who lives in a private mess along with three other women, went out with her boyfriend to the beach on account of the Raja festival.
Boyfriend threatened, tied up
The case was registered at the Gopalpur police station after the woman filed a First Information Report (FIR) on Monday. The woman in her complaint has specified that she was sitting with her boyfriend when the group of ten men approached them, detained her boyfriend and took turns to rape her. The woman is an undergraduate student and is currently pursuing her studies.
Investigations underway
All ten people have been arrested, the police confirmed. The detained persons are all adults, and the police have taken proactive measures to interrogate them from different angles to ascertain all the relevant details related to the case. “All the detained persons are adults, and we are interrogating them from various angles,” the police told reporters.
The group allegedly had begun taking photographs of the two and had blackmailed them to post the pictures online, and had tied up her boyfriend.
Odisha government responds swiftly
Responding swiftly to the incident, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said that she has ordered a thorough investigation and taken all necessary steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur in future.
“I am deeply saddened by the incident of gang rape of a young woman at Gopalpur beach. So far, 10 people have been arrested. I have spoken to the SP regarding this incident and have ordered a thorough investigation and necessary steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur in future,” Parida said in a post on X.
A senior police officer has said that not all the detained persons are locals and had visited the beach on account of the Raja festival. The medical test of the victim and the ten people detained would also be conducted.
