‘With the support of….’: Tharoor takes a dig at China over blocking blacklisting on Pak terror groups at UN

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who is part of an all-party delegation visiting abroad to nail Pakistan’s role in terrorism, slammed China for helping Pakistan and blocking India’s efforts to blacklist terrorist groups at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Taking about how China shielded efforts to shield Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba-backed The Resistance Front (TRF) at the UN, he said, “India has been reporting about TRF to UN Sanctions Committee, time after time and when New Delhi encouraged our friends on the Security Council to mention the Resistance Front in the press statement that the Security Council issued.”

He added, “Pakistan, I am sorry to say that with the support of your friend in China, took out the name, therefore there is not even a reference. We are not on the United Nations Security Council, and neither are you. We have to change this situation. Both of us should be on the Council together.”

The Thiruvananthapuram MP, while speaking to Ambassador Celso Amorim of Brazil, pointed out on challenges faced by India in countering terrorism at the international level because of the geopolitical alliances within the UNSC. He also stressed the need to reform the UNSC to ensure more inclusive global representation. “We are not on the Security Council, neither are you. We have to change that situation,” he said. The delegation led by Tharoor is presently in Brazil and will head to the US next. The visit will clash with a Pakistan delegation, which will also visit the US at the same time.

Tharoor expresses concerns over the Colorado attack

Earlier on Monday, he expressed concerns over the terror attack in Colorado. Taking to X, he wrote, “Terror has no place’ in our countries.”. Meanwhile, the FBI charged a 45-year-old man, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, for allegedly carrying out a “targeted terror attack” that occurred in Colorado’s Boulder on Sunday. Several peaceful Israeli supporters were in the incident, Fox News reported. The agency said that six people aged between 67 and 88 years were injured and were taken to the hospital.
