Dehradun: In response to heightened security concerns following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, a nationwide civil defense mock drill is set to take place on May 7.
Dehradun, known for its defense and research institutions, will be a key location for the security preparedness exercise, aimed at ensuring swift response mechanisms and raising public awareness about vigilance during emergencies. With over 100 key defense and research establishments, the region requires heightened security vigilance.
Mock drill locations & objectives
The Civil Defense team, alongside security forces, will conduct the mock drill in seven key locations across Dehradun as Dhara Police Chowki, Blind school Rajpur Road, Lakkhi Bagh police station, District Magistrate Complex, Collectorate Dehradun, Araghar Police Chowki, MDDA Colony near ISBT.
The purpose of this drill is to simulate emergency responses, ensuring that security forces, volunteers, and citizens are well-prepared to handle any potential threats, disasters, or external attacks. Sirens and hooters will sound at 4 PM to mark the beginning of the operation, alerting the public and testing rapid deployment strategies.
Strategic importance of Dehradun
Dehradun holds a prestigious position on the international map due to its numerous defense and central institutions, including: Indian Military Academy (IMA), Forest Research Institute (FRI), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Survey of India & DEAL, Ordnance Factory, and the Doon School & Welham Schools. With over 100 key defense and research establishments, the region requires heightened security vigilance. The drill will ensure that security protocols are in place for protecting critical infrastructure, personnel, and citizens.
Government & Law enforcement directives
A high-level security meeting was convened on Tuesday at the Rishiparna Auditorium, Collectorate Dehradun, led by District Magistrate Savin Basnal and Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh. The meeting included representatives from the Army, Paramilitary forces, Civil Defense, IRS system wardens, and volunteers. Officials discussed necessary preparedness measures, focusing on emergency coordination, evacuation procedures, and defense strategies.
Public awareness & readiness
The Uttarakhand government, following directives from the Home Ministry of India and Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand, has emphasized the importance of public cooperation during the drill. Residents are encouraged to remain alert, avoid panic, and follow security guidelines provided by authorities.
