Why Manmohan Singh always wore blue turban? Know the story behind his iconic choice

New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92, was known not just for his leadership and contributions to India’s economy, but also for his signature blue turban. Often seen wearing the distinctive color, Manmohan Singh was frequently asked about his choice of turban. In a speech he gave during a 2006 event where he was honoured with a Doctorate of Law, Manmohan Singh revealed the personal connection he had to the blue turban.

Manmohan Singh said that the light blue color was a tribute to his time at the University of Cambridge, where he completed his studies. “Blue is one of my favourites and is often seen on my head,” Singh said with a smile, reflecting on how the color became a symbol of his fond memories of Cambridge. The blue turban became part of his identity and a reminder of the unforgettable years spent at the prestigious university.

The event in 2006, where Manmohan Singh received the honorary degree, was a moment of pride and recognition. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, noticed Singh’s blue turban and remarked, “Look at the colour of his turban,” causing the audience to applaud. At that moment, Singh spoke about how the color was more than just a fashion choice—it was a symbol of the values he had learned during his time at Cambridge.

Manmohan Singh’s time at Cambridge was deeply influential, and he credited his teachers and peers for shaping his intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness, and fearlessness. He fondly remembered renowned economists like Nicholas Kaldor, Joan Robinson, and Amartya Sen, who had a lasting impact on his academic and professional journey.

The blue turban, which became a trademark for Manmohan Singh, was also a symbol of his distinguished career, as reported by The Hindustan Times. As the first Sikh Prime Minister of India, Singh’s leadership from 2004 to 2014 left a lasting imprint on the nation’s economy. Under his guidance, India saw unprecedented economic growth, and millions were lifted out of poverty.

Manmohan Singh’s demise

Manmohan Singh’s death on Thursday evening at AIIMS, New Delhi, marked the end of an era. He had been rushed to the hospital after a sudden loss of consciousness at home. His body will be kept at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi for public viewing, allowing citizens to pay their respects.

As India mourns the loss of this visionary leader, the legacy of Manmohan Singh, the man who led the country through critical economic reforms and played a key role in shaping modern India, will continue to inspire generations to come.
