New Delhi: Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, has hit headlines due to his comments praising Operation Sindoor and slamming US President on his statement on the ceasefire with Pakistan, much to the chagrin of Congress leadership.
Shashi Tharor has earlier praised Operation Sindoor in which Indian armed forces struck terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Tharoor has also strongly opposed US President Donald Trump’s claim of ceasefire and taking credit for it.
Congress distances itself from Tharoor’s statement
Even as his party, the Congress, attempts to corner the BJP over ceasefire claims by President Trump, Shashi Tharoor actions of praising the government and slamming Trump has embarrassed the party leadership. Amid all this, Tharoor’s party has distanced itself from his posts on X over the ceasefire.
During a press briefing by Congress, when Jairam Ramesh was asked about Shashi Tharoor’s statement, the party distanced itself from his statements on X. Jairam Ramesh said, “This is his opinion, when Tharoor Sahab speaks, it is not the opinion of the party.”
Tharoor has crossed ‘Laxman Rekha’
Shashi Tharoor has crossed the ‘Laxman Rekha’ with his repeated comments on India-Pakistan tensions, said told TV9 Network after a meeting of senior Congress leaders which included Shahsi Tharoor, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sachin Pilot at the 24, Akbar Road office in New Delhi.
Without naming anyone, the Congress leadership gave a ‘clear message’ to party leaders telling them this is not the time to express personal views, but to amplify the party’s stand, the sources further said.
What did Shashi Tharoor posted?
Shashi Tharoor has questioned the ceasefire announcement between India and Pakistan by US President and posted on social media handle X saying, “Trump’s post is disappointing for India in four ways: First, it suggests a false equivalence between victim and perpetrator and ignores the US’s previous uncompromising stance against Pakistan’s ties to cross-border terrorism. Second, it gives Pakistan a negotiating framework.”
Mr Trump’s post is disappointing for India in four important ways: First, it implies a false equivalence between the victim and the perpetrator, and seemingly overlooks the US’ own past unwavering stance against Pakistan’s well-documented links to cross-border terrorism. He further added, “India will never negotiate with terrorists at gun point. Third, it “internationalises” the Kashmir dispute, a clear motive of the terrorists. India rejects the idea of a dispute and considers the problem an internal matter of India. India has never sought mediation from a foreign country on its problems with Pakistan, nor is it likely to. Fourth, it reconnects India and Pakistan in the global imagination.”
Congress questioned govt on ceasefire
Recently in a press briefing, Congress leader Pawan Khera questioned the government saying, “Who is taking decisions for this country? How is US getting the ceasefire done? This is a big question. Why has the PM not denied this in his address to the nation? Why don’t PM tell us about the conditions of the ceasefire, what conditions were put in front of Pakistan, what conditions were put by the Indian government.”
He also said, “America has not only talked about mediation in the Kashmir issue, but has also tried to put Prime Ministers of Pakistan and India on the same level. This may be acceptable to the Prime Minister, but not to us.”
