‘Where ignorance is bliss…’: Tharoor shares cryptic post as reports of ‘rift’ with Congress surface

New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor posted a cryptic post on X on Saturday, quoting the famous English poet Thomas Gray “Where ignorance is bliss, ‘tis folly to be wise.” His post comes amid reports of ongoing differences allegedly between him and the grand old party. He captioned the post as, “Thought of the day.”

The alleged rift reportedly stemmed from an article in which Tharoor commended the Kerala government’s policies. Besides, Tharoor had also reportedly lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US.

While giving clarification for his remarks, Tharoor was quoted as saying by ANI, “For 16 years, I have been in politics. My attitude has been that when somebody in the government, whether it’s our government or some other party’s government, does the right thing or does something well, one should acknowledge and praise it, and when they do something badly, one should criticise it.”

He clarified that the article particularly praised the entrepreneurial growth in Kerala under the current Left regime, rather than the government itself. “There is MUCH more to be done. But when something good emerges, even if only in one area, it is petty not to acknowledge it. I based myself principally on the Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2024, and on the specific facts and figures cited in my article,” he told ANI.

He also urged that his article should be read before making an one-line comment. “It doesn’t mention party politics, but speaks of things Kerala needs to do to get out of the economic doldrums — changes I have been demanding in the state during all my 16 years in politics,” he pointed out.

According to some reports, Tharoor is peeved over the lack of clarity regarding his role within the Congress party and feels that he is being sidelined. On Tuesday, Tharoor had a meeting with Rahul Gandhi after he was criticised by the party’s Kerala unit for his article.
