New Delhi: Industrialists, politicians, and celebrities are mourning the passing of Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, who died on October 9 at a Mumbai hospital.

Ratan Tata will be remembered as a visionary industrialist and philanthropist whose impact transformed India’s business landscape and inspired generations. In an interview a few years ago, when asked about his legacy, Tata simply stated that he wished to be remembered as “someone who made a difference.”

“I’d like to be remembered as a person who made a difference, not anything more, not anything less,” he said during an interview. The clip was shared by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw who mourned Mr Tata’s demise, calling him “a visionary business leader, an extraordinary nation-builder, and a remarkable human being. His contributions to industry, society, and humanity have left an indelible legacy.”

In another interaction with CNBC-TV18, Ratan Tata said he wants to be remembered as someone who was able to make a change.

Ratan Tata, who is credited with transforming the Tata Group into a globally recognised conglomerate, passed away at the age of 86 on Wednesday night at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.

On Thursday, the body of legendary industrialist Ratan Tata was taken from his residence in a hearse adorned with white flowers to the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai, where it would be placed for the public to pay their last respects. The last rites will take place at the Worli crematorium in the evening.

Before the hearse departed from Tata’s home, located just a few kilometers from the NCPA, the Mumbai Police band played a tribute in his honour. As news of Tata’s passing spread, people from various walks of life gathered outside his residence early morning to offer their condolences. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was among the first visitors at Tata’s home.
