Gandhinagar: In a major blow to ruling BJP in Gujarat, AAP candidate Gopal Italia won the Visavadar seat that went to bypoll on Thursday. Italia defeated his nearest rival Rajendra Chavda of the BJP by a margin of over 17,000 votes. Bye-election to two Assembly seats in Gujarat – Visavadar and Kadi – was held on June 19. The resignation of the then AAP legislator Bhupendra Bhayani necessitated the bypoll in the constituency. The Visavadar seat in Junagadh district was lying vacant since December 2023 following Bhayani’s switch over to the BJP.
The BJP won the Kadi seat. The party’s candidate Rajendrakumar (Rajubhai) Daneshwar Chavda defeated Rameshbhai Chavda of the Congress by a margin of nearly 40,000 votes. The bypoll to the seat reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates was necessitated following the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki on February 4.
