New Delhi: Indian cricket stylish player Virat Kohli on Tuesday turned 36 and the world of sports have another year to celebrate the birthday of one of the most accomplished player of the sport. We take a deep dive into the list of records and milestones attained by the iconic cricketer.

Having made his international debut on August 18, 2008, Kohli has been the cynosure of the Indian batting order across formats. Series after series, tournaments after tournaments, years after years, Kohli has got the knack of breaking records and set the benchmark for the posterity.

With 27134 runs in 538 innings, Kohli has scored the fourth most runs across all formats of international cricket. He has scored 13906 runs in One-Day Internationals, which is the third most in the history of the format. He has made 4188 runs in T20Is, the second most of all-time. He recently crossed 9000 runs in Test cricket during the India-New Zealand Test series.

Kohli has accumulated 80 international hundreds with 50 in ODIs, 29 in Tests, and one in T20Is. Only legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has more international tons (100) than Kohli. The Delhi-born cricketer is the only player in the history of the game to hit 50 One-Day International centuries.

In the ODIs, Kohli is the fastest batter to reach the landmarks of 8000 runs (175 innings), 9000 runs (194 innings), 10000 runs (205 innings), 11000 runs (222 innings), 12000 runs (242 innings) and 13000 runs (267 innings).

In T20Is, the Indian batting icon has the record of fastest batter to score 4000 runs in 96 innings.

Virat Kohli ICC event record

Virat Kohli is the only player to score more than 3000 runs in major ICC events such as World Cups. He has scored 3,616 runs, involving five centuries and 32 fifties. He has scored 1795  runs in 37 World Cup (ODIs) matches across four editions with only Tendulkar ahead of him with 2278 runs.

He tops the charts with 1292 runs in the T20 World Cup tournament, having made the runs in 33 innings in a total of five editions of the biennial ICC event. He has made 529 runs in 12 innings in the ICC Champions Trophy after featuring in three tournaments of the 50-over knockout format.

Virat Kohli captaincy record

Virat Kohli was the successor of iconic cricketer MS Dhoni in all three formats of international cricket. He took over the Test captaincy at the end of 2014 before taking on the white-ball format leadership in the start of 2017. He led India in 213 matches across formats, having won 135, lost 60 and  14 (tied/draw/no result) to record an overall win per cent of 63.38.

In India’s rich Test history, Kohli has captained the team in the most matches – 68 – from 2014 to 2022. He won 40 Test matches, lost 17, and 11 matches turned in draw. He is the most successful Test captain with 70.17 % win record in the red-ball format. India won their first Test series in Australia in 2018-19 under the astute leadership of Kohli.

He also has a good record as an ODI captain with 65 wins registered out of 95 matches he donned the captain’s armband with a 70.43% win record. Kohli led India in 50 T20I matches with 30 wins and a win per cent of 64.58.

Virat Kohli IPL record

Virat Kohli is the only player to feature for one Indian Premier League (IPL) team since the tournament’s inception in 2008. He has played 252 matches for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) from 2008 to 2024. Kohli is the highest run-getter of IPL with 8004 runs in 244 innings with a strike rate of 131.97. No other cricketer has scored more than 7000 runs in the cash-rich league.

Kohli has hit 55 half-centuries and eight centuries in the IPL. He is only behind David Warner (62) in terms of scoring most IPL fifties while his eight centuries are the most by any batter in the league with former Rajasthan Royals batter Jos Buttler sitting in the second place with seven three-figure scores.

With 705 boundaries in the tournament, Kohli is the only other batter than Shikhar Dhawan (768) to hit more than 700 fours in the IPL.

Virat Kohli has captained RCB in 143 matches between 2011 and 2023, having won 66 and lost 70 with a win percentage of 48.56.
