New Delhi: Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are likely to contest the upcoming Assembly elections in Haryana on Congress ticket. The duo met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi earlier today. Following their meeting with Gandhi, the wrestlers met Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, in Delhi.

For the past few weeks, speculations have been rife that Phogat and Punia might join the Congress and contest the October 1 Haryana Assembly polls.

Earlier, after returning to India from the Paris Olympics, Phogat had met former Haryana chief minister and senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda who had said whoever wants to join his party is welcomed. Congress’ Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda had also visited airport to welcome Phogat at the Delhi airport on her arrival from the Paris Olympics.

Haryana is set to go to polls in a single phase on October 1 and counting of votes will be held on October 4. The state will witness a direct contest between the Congress and the BJP. The Aam Aadmi Party or AAP has also said that it will contest this time.
