Chennai: Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Sunday held a meeting where resolutions were passed against several key issues, including the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, the Waqf Amendment Bill and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

During the executive and district functionaries meeting chaired by Vijay, the party criticised the MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government for the perceived decline in law and order in Tamil Nadu. The resolution mentioned the party’s stance on state autonomy, saying, “Education falls under the State list.

If the Union Government shifts education to the State List, the state can independently revoke NEET.” Furthermore, the executive committee expressed opposition to the Union Government’s perceived interference and accused the DMK government of deceiving the people of Tamil Nadu with unfulfilled promises.

TVK reaffirms principles while opposing Waqf Bill

TVK’s resolution labelled the ‘One Nation, One Election’ concept as contrary to the principles of democracy and federalism. The meeting concluded with a commitment to adhere to the party’s ideology and policies “wholeheartedly and strongly.” Apart from that, the TVK condemned the BJP and the Centre, calling the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, currently under review by a Joint Parliamentary Committee, an “attack on federalism” and urged its withdrawal.

Vijay emphasises secular social justice

During a state conference in Chennai last week, Vijay announced that his party is grounded in the principles of secular social justice, drawing inspiration from leaders like EVR Periyar and K Kamaraj. The 50-year-old actor, affectionately known as ‘Thalapathy’ or leader, criticised the DMK. He said, “There’s a group here singing the same song, calling anyone who enters politics. They are deceiving the public and engaging in underground dealings. In the name of the Dravidian Model, they are running an anti-people government that betrays the citizens.”
