Kanpur: Stones were pelted on the Varanasi-Delhi Vande Bharat Express on Wednesday evening in Kanpur, damaging a window pane of one of the coaches a slight delay in the train’s movement, Railway officials said.

The incident took place near the Panaki Dham railway station in Kanpur at around 7.05 pm. As the 22435 Vande Bharat train was approaching the station, stones were pelted at the C7 coach, causing damage to its windows. The passengers were reportedly left in shock and some even took cover under the seats in a state of panic.

The loco pilot of the Vande Bharat was alerted who then informed the Railway authorities. A team of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway (GRP) arrived at the spot and inspected the perimeter but the miscreants who pelted the stones were not found.

The personnel patrolled the train’s router from Panki to Bhaupur before it resumed its journey to Delhi. The incident caused a short delay in the train’s journey.  A case has been lodged against unidentified persons by the Panki RPF in connection with the stone pelting incident. No injuries were reported in the incident.

This comes amid a spate of stone pelting and sabotage attempts on trains in India. On September 13, the Vande Bharat Express was attacked by miscreants just two days before its official commencement of regular services. The incident occurred in the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, where the Durg-Visakhapatnam Vande Bharat Express was undergoing a trial run. Police arrested 5 persons in this connection.

In August, the Ahmedabad-Jodhpur Vande Bharat Express collided with a cement slab placed on the railway tracks in Rajasthan’s Pali district. The train’s cattle guard struck the cement slab during the incident.

Pelting stones on a train is a criminal offence under sections 153 and 154 (anyone who endangers the safety of a person travelling on a railway by a willful act or omission is punishable with up to five years in prison) of the Railways Act, 1989.
