Uttarakhand weather update: Yellow alert for heavy rain in Nainital, Champawat, Pithoragarh & Bageshwar

Dehradun: The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for intense rainfall and strong winds in Nainital, Champawat, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar, as Uttarakhand experiences pre-monsoon showers ahead of schedule. This year, the monsoon is expected to arrive 18 days early, reaching the state a week before its normal date of June 20.

The state has received 75% more rainfall than the average for May, intensifying weather fluctuations and bringing relief from scorching temperatures. Light to moderate rain is expected until June 2, with isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) likely in both hilly and plain districts.

Intense weather in hills & plains

Heavy rain at isolated places in hilly districts is predicted, particularly affecting Nainital, Champawat, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar, while Dehradun and surrounding areas will see partial cloud cover with intermittent drizzling. The sun and clouds are playing hide and seek, keeping daytime temperatures warm but introducing humidity and discomfort.

Early monsoon & changing weather patterns

Meteorological Center Director Bikram Singh attributes these shifts to lower-latitude western disturbances, making them more effective and widespread than usual. Continuous moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea has strengthened pre-monsoon activity, causing more rainfall across Uttarakhand. The monsoon had already hit Kerala eight days ahead of schedule, and the early arrival in Uttarakhand is a significant development for agriculture, tourism, and daily life.

Impact on pilgrimage & travel

Pilgrims traveling for the Char Dham Yatra and tourists heading to scenic spots should prepare for unpredictable weather conditions, as the heavy showers could lead to landslides, waterlogging, and road disruptions in mountain regions. Authorities have advised caution in districts under yellow alert, urging residents to monitor forecasts and prepare for adverse conditions.

Upcoming forecast

According to the Meteorological Center, light to moderate rain will continue till June 2, with strong winds and thunderstorms at isolated places. The weather will remain unstable, prompting advisories for travel and outdoor activities. With Uttarakhand witnessing unpredictable weather shifts, the early arrival of the monsoon is setting a unique precedent, altering seasonal expectations for residents and visitors alike.
