Uttarakhand weather update: Yellow alert for heavy rain in Dehradun, Tehri and Pauri; landslide, lightning risk amid monsoon fury

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and intense spells of rain are expected in isolated hilly areas, raising concerns over landslides and flash floods.

Heavy rain has been disrupting daily life across both mountainous and low-lying regions

The state has been witnessing relentless rain for several days, turning roads into rivers and disrupting daily life across both mountainous and low-lying regions. Schools have been shut in multiple districts including Dehradun, Nainital and Champawat as a precautionary measure. The administration has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors during peak rainfall hours.

According to the latest forecast, the weather is likely to remain unstable for the next three days, with the possibility of sudden cloudbursts and lightning strikes. The IMD has warned of intense rainfall pockets that could trigger landslides, especially in vulnerable zones along the Char Dham routes and steep hill slopes.

Waterlogging has been reported in several areas of Dehradun

In Dehradun, waterlogging has been reported in several areas, with drains overflowing and traffic movement severely affected. The Bindal River, which flows through the city, has swelled dangerously, prompting authorities to monitor its level closely. Meanwhile, in Tehri and Pauri, landslide-prone zones have been cordoned off and disaster response teams are on standby.

SDRF teams have been deployed in sensitive areas

The State Emergency Operations Centre has directed district magistrates to remain alert and ensure timely dissemination of weather updates. SDRF teams have been deployed in sensitive areas, and local police are assisting in evacuation and traffic control where needed.

Residents in hilly districts have been urged to avoid staying under trees or in open fields during thunderstorms. The risk of lightning strikes remains high, and mobile alerts are being sent to warn people in real time. Tourists and pilgrims have also been advised to postpone travel plans to high-altitude destinations until conditions stabilize.

Rains have brought some relief to farmers

Despite the challenges, the rains have brought some relief to farmers preparing for paddy plantation. However, the risk to life and infrastructure remains significant, especially with saturated soil increasing the likelihood of slope failures. The IMD has also indicated that rainfall intensity may increase in the coming days due to a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal, which could further fuel monsoon activity in northern India.

As Uttarakhand braces for continued downpours, the focus remains on preparedness and public safety. Authorities have reiterated the importance of following official advisories, avoiding riverbanks, and reporting any signs of slope instability or water accumulation.
