Dehradun: Indian Meteorological Department, Dehradun sounded an orange alert on Tuesday for six districts in Uttarakhand with prediction of very intense to extremely intense spells of rains in these districts. IMD also warned people about landslide and rockfall incidents in these areas.
Six districts including capital Dehradun may see very heavy rains today
According to the director, IMD, Dehradun, Bikram Singh, districts like Pithoragarh, Dehradun, Bageshwar along with lower Kumaon districts Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar can witness intense to very intense spells of rains with thunderstorm accompanied with lightning on Tuesday. Apart from this, heavy to very heavy rains are forecasted for remaining districts that are also under a yellow alert.
Need to remain vigilant for coming two days
As per the weather prediction, areas with orange alert can see landslides, rock fall and mudslides due to heavy rain or intense rainfall spell at isolated places. This may cause blocking/washout of roads/highways/bridges as well. Along with this, continuous heavy rainfall may cause Dams/Barrages to increase the discharge causing rise in the river water level. Moreover, very/extremely intense rainfall can produce flash flooding, inundation in low lying areas. Additionally, it may also cause disruptions in flight operations/ Helicopter operations. Therefore, IMD advised people to remain alert in the coming two days.
Pilgrims and tourists to stay cautious
People residing in vulnerable areas and pilgrims/tourists travelling to Char Dham or other locations to remain alert and travel only if necessary. In addition, during continuous / heavy rains, they are suggested to keep a watch on steep slopes while travelling. Settlements/People residing near major rivers and their tributaries; rivulets/streams and low lying areas and flood plains are to remain alert. Along with this, the state government authorities are advised to take all necessary precautionary measures for smooth movement of people. Tourists are also advised to monitor media reports for updates. Farmers are advised to make necessary arrangements for drainage of excess water from the fields. The harvested produce may be kept in safe places.
