Several districts, including Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Almora, Nainital, and Champawat, are expected to experience light to moderate rain and thunderstorms.

Heavy rain and temperature drop across Uttarakhand

Pre-monsoon showers have intensified across Uttarakhand, bringing significant temperature drops in the last 24 hours. Dehradun recorded a 4°C decrease, while Tehri saw a maximum drop of 9°C. The rainfall in the Char Dham region has further cooled the atmosphere, with intermittent showers reported in Kedarnath and surrounding areas.

On Monday, thunderstorms accompanied by light rain persisted until noon, followed by brief sunshine before humidity returned. The changing weather pattern has raised concerns about landslides and water source depletion in the Himalayan region.

Heavy rain warning for Dehradun and other districts

The weather department has issued a warning for heavy rain in Dehradun, along with thunderstorms in Pauri, Tehri, and Rudraprayag. Additionally, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, and Nainital may experience scattered showers.

Precautions and advisory

The Indian meteorological department (IMD) has advised residents and tourists to stay alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms, especially in landslide-prone areas. The orange alert suggests strong winds and intense rainfall, requiring caution for travelers. With monsoon approaching, Uttarakhand’s weather patterns will continue to shift, bringing cooler temperatures and increased rainfall. Travelers should plan accordingly, ensuring safety and preparedness for changing conditions.

Monsoon is anticipated to become active in the state after June 10

Director of the Meteorological Department Center, Bikram Singh, stated that good pre-monsoon rainfall is expected in the first week of June, particularly in the hilly districts, where heavy rain is likely. However, after June 5, people will get some relief from the showers. Before this, light rain is expected at many places in Uttarakhand, which can be considered pre-monsoon showers. As for the monsoon, it is anticipated to become active in the state after June 10. Following its arrival, rainfall will intensify across the region. The long-term average rainfall standard in Uttarakhand is 87 cm, but this year, rainfall is expected to be six percent above normal, potentially reaching 108 percent of the average.
