Dehradun: After days of scorching heat, Uttarakhand is finally experiencing widespread rainfall, bringing much-needed relief to residents. The state has witnessed a heavy downpour in Dehradun, Nainital, and Mussoorie on Friday, along with other hilly parts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted heavy rain from June 13, and the forecast has proven accurate, with downpours recorded across multiple districts, including Nainital, Almora, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Udham Singh Nagar, and Haldwani. Authorities have issued alerts for strong winds and thunderstorms, urging residents and travelers to remain cautious.
Heatwave breaks as rainfall cools the region
For the past several days, temperatures had soared beyond 40°C, making life unbearable for many across the state. The intense heatwave had left residents struggling, but the arrival of rain has lowered temperatures significantly, offering temporary relief.
IMD issues orange and yellow alerts
The IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rain in Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Bageshwar, warning of potential disruptions in these areas. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for Champawat and Pithoragarh, cautioning residents about intense showers and strong winds. In the plains, including Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms and gusty winds, urging people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Travel advisory for pilgrims and tourists
With heavy rain affecting multiple districts, the IMD has advised travelers to exercise caution, especially those undertaking the Char Dham Yatra. Pilgrims have been asked to halt their journey at designated safe locations until the weather stabilizes. Authorities have also warned against crossing rivers and streams without checking water levels, as flash floods and landslides remain a serious risk.
Disaster management on high alert
In response to the intense rainfall, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been placed on high alert. Officials have been instructed to respond immediately in case of emergencies, ensuring swift action in affected areas.
Rain expected until June 17
The IMD forecasts continued rainfall across Uttarakhand until June 17, with light showers expected in various districts. While the rain has provided relief from the heat, authorities remain cautious, as excessive rainfall could lead to flooding and landslides. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts, avoid traveling to high-risk areas, and follow safety guidelines issued by the administration.
