Currently, AI is being used on a pilot basis to develop a working plan for the Garhwal Forest Division. Initial results have been very promising, providing excellent analysis and management prescriptions for better biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management, and addressing the challenges posed by climate change on vegetation.

A 10-year-plan has been chalked out for various types of forests in the state

Approximately two-thirds of Uttarakhand is covered by various types of forests, including tropical forests in the plains, temperate forests in the mid-Himalayan region, and alpine meadows in high-altitude areas. For each Forest Division, a working plan is prepared for a 10-year period following a comprehensive ground exercise. This exercise involves collecting data on biodiversity, wildlife, watershed areas, and potential threats. According to Sanjiv Chaturvedi, chief conservator of forest, “Use of AI has been started on a pilot basis and the results are very encouraging.”

SC orders to conduct all activities with such approved plans

Based on this analysis, management prescriptions are recommended. These plans are then approved by the Central Government. Moreover, as per the Supreme Court order, all activities in forest areas of the country can be carried out only in accordance with such approved working plans.

AI tools are providing better analysis about ecosystem

Under this new effort for better forest management, AI software is being used to analyze data collected about different forest types and tree species. This helps provide a clearer picture of the ecosystem, identifying priority species and areas that need specific management actions. Additionally, AI tools are being used to determine the best forestry practices for each type of forest and assess the stability of the ecosystem based on the species present. After seeing positive results in the Garhwal Forest Division, the Uttarakhand Forest Department plans to extend this approach to other Forest Divisions in the state.
