Roorkee: In a tragic incident at IIT Roorkee, a second-year BTech student named Anshu Malaiya was found dead in her hostel room. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to unlock Anshu’s mobile phone and laptop to gather more information.

Anshu, who hailed from Itarsi in Madhya Pradesh, had been alone in her room at the Kasturba Bhavan hostel since Tuesday afternoon. In the evening, a fellow student came to meet her but found the door locked from the inside and alerted the authorities.

Police are investigating the matter from the suicide angle

Police are currently investigating the matter, with initial suspicions pointing toward suicide. However, the cause of her death has yet to be officially confirmed. Anshu was performing well academically and had cleared all her exams so far. Despite this, the reasons behind her suspected suicide remain unknown, and her family has declined to speak with the media about the incident.

Police didn’t find any suicide note

Inspector Narendra Singh Bisht, in charge of Civil Lines police station, said, “Our team reached the spot, broke open the door, and recovered the body. We did not find any suicide note. Her mobile phone and laptop are password-protected, and efforts are being made to unlock them. A forensic team has examined the scene. The body has been handed over to the family after the postmortem.”

Third suspected suicide in a year

In the month of February last year, a student from Hyderabad was also found dead in his hostel room. Afterwards, a student from Rajasthan was also found dead in the same situation in his hostel room. Meanwhile, Earlier in January, a third-year student named Shaon Mallick was found dead at the Azad Hall of IIT Kharagpur. Shaon was the 21-year-old son of a government officer. In the same week, the body of an employee (Junior Lab Technician cum Lab Assistant) was recovered from the quarters of the campus.
