Pithoragarh: A massive landslide in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district has disrupted the Adi Kailash Yatra, leaving hundreds of pilgrims stranded on the sacred route. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has swiftly deployed a team to clear the debris and restore road access, but the challenging terrain is causing delays in the rescue process.

Landslide-prone Himalayan terrain

Nestled in the Kumaon region of the Himalayas, Pithoragarh is highly vulnerable to landslides, especially during monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons. In 2024 alone, Uttarakhand recorded 292 landslides, severely disrupting connectivity in its hill districts. In December 2024, a major landslide on the Dharchula–Tawaghat National Highway stranded dozens of vehicles, while another blocked the Tawaghat–Lipulekh road, cutting off access to Darma, Byas, and Chauda valleys.

Given the historical frequency of landslides in the region, authorities are working to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of stranded pilgrims.

About the Adi Kailash route

The Adi Kailash pilgrimage is part of the sacred Panch Kailash circuit, passing through Dharchula and Lipulekh Pass in eastern Uttarakhand. The route consists of both motorable roads and trekking paths, leading to the sacred site at an altitude of 5,945 meters. Due to high-altitude conditions, the region frequently experiences weather disruptions, making travel challenging for pilgrims. The current blockage has left many devotees uncertain about their journey, as efforts to clear the route continue.

Weather challenges

Meanwhile, changing weather conditions in Uttarakhand are adding to the difficulties faced by rescue teams. On Monday, Chamoli district witnessed rain and hailstorms in lower areas, while higher altitudes received snowfall. In Mandal Valley, heavy hail storms disrupted local life.

Efforts to restore access and ensure pilgrim safety

Authorities are focusing on clearing debris to restore road access, while safety measures have been intensified to prevent further incidents. The BRO team continues its work, and official updates will determine when pilgrims can resume their journey. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand remains on high alert, with officials urging residents and travelers to exercise caution during adverse weather conditions.

The Adi Kailash Yatra holds immense spiritual significance, and efforts are underway to ensure the safe passage of stranded pilgrims, preserving the sanctity and continuity of the sacred journey.
