Uttarakhand builds 1481 km of roads in 3 years, 35 villages get roads under PMGSY scheme

Dehradun: Achieving a significant feat, the Uttarakhand government has been successful in providing roads in Uttarakhand villages. In the last three years, leveraging the combined efforts of the central and state governments, 519 roads with a total length of 1481 km were constructed in Uttarakhand, connecting 35 new villages with populations exceeding 250 people.

During this period, the state government not only constructed 519 new roads and 195 bridges but also upgraded 61 existing rural roads spanning 159 km. A total of Rs 2310 crore was invested in these projects, significantly improving the mobility of villagers by connecting 35 settlements to the road network.

Government of India has approved Rs 1824 crore for upgrading 2288 km of previously constructed roads

The first and second phases of the scheme are nearing completion. Under the third phase of PMGSY, the Government of India has approved Rs 1824 crore for upgrading 2288 km of previously constructed roads. Additionally, under the Vibrant Village Scheme, Rs 119 crore has been sanctioned to connect eight more settlements lacking road connectivity. Following these efforts, only 1796 settlements with populations under 150 remain without road access in the state.

2329 roads and 312 bridges have been completed in Uttarakhand

The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, initiated by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in December 2000, aims to connect all villages with populations over 250 in rural hilly areas with all-weather roads. The scheme is 90% centrally funded, with the remaining 10% contributed by the state government. Since its inception, 2329 roads and 312 bridges have been completed in Uttarakhand, with a total expenditure of Rs 10183 crore, connecting 1846 settlements by road.

Roads are the basis of progress

In this concern, Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, said, “Roads are the basis of progress, so our government is determined to provide all-weather roads to every village. For this, work is being done rapidly on the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana. Along with this, efforts are also being made to provide roads to the remaining villages deprived of road connectivity.”
