Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party on Wednesday announced the list of six candidstes for the upcoming by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, where polls are due this year.

By-elections due in 10 constituenciesBy-election dates yet to be announced

While the party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s cousin,Tej Pratap Yadav has been fielded from Karhal, it has fielded Nasim Solank from Sishamau and Ajit Prasad from Milkipur constituencies. Apart from them, the party has also fielded Shobahwati Verma from Katehari constituency, Mustafa Siddiqi from Phulpur and Dr Jyoti Bind from Manjhwa.

By-elections due in 10 constituencies

The by-polls are due in 10 constituencies in the state this year. While the party has fielded six candidates it has four seats for its INDIA alliance partner Congress. The constituencies which are slated to go on polls are Karhal (Mainpuri), Katehari (Ambedkar Nagar), Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), Milkipur (Ayodhya), Sishamau (Kanpur city), Ghaziabad, Majhawan (Mirzapur), Khair (Aligarh), Phulpur (Prayagraj) and Kundarki (Moradabad).

Nine of the 10 seats fell vacant after the MLAs were elected to the Lok Sabha in the general elections conducted earlier this year. The Sishamau seat fell vacant after its Samajwadi Party MLA, Irfan Solanki, was disqualified after being convicted in a criminal case.

By-election dates yet to be announced

While the dates for by-elections have not yet been announced, the Karhal seat fell vacant after Akhilesh Yadav won the Lok Sabha election from Kannauj. Similarly, Katehari’s seat fell vacant after SP MP Lalji Verma won Lok Sabha elections from Ambedkar Nagar.

The Meerapur Assembly seat too fell vacant after its MLA and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Chandan Chauhan won Lok Sabha elections from Bijnor. Ghaziabad seat too fell vacant after BJP MLA Atul Garg was elected to Lok Sabha. Notably, the SP and Congress continued disagreements on seat-sharing arrangements for upcoming bypolls in the state. The part wants to contest in five seats while the Samajwadi Party has offered them four.
