Tale of treachery: Woman killed by adopted daughter she found abandoned as baby on roadside

New Delhi: There is a famous saying that ‘Truth is stranger than fiction’, and the incident that we are going to describe here aptly shows the truth of the phrase. Imagine a baby abandoned on the roadside in Odisha. She was just a baby whom a woman found and adopted. Years later, she grew up and killed the same woman who gave her a new lease of life with the aid of two men. Well, this saga can beat many fictional thriller movies you have seen.

Police has stated that a 13-year-old student of Class 8, with the help of her two male friends, has allegedly tried to kill Rajalaxmi Kar, the 54-year-old woman who adopted her a decade ago. The incident took place on April 29 at their rented residence in Gajapati district’s Paralakhemundi town. If you are wondering about the motive, then it must be informed the police has said that Rajalaxmi opposed the relationship of her daughter with the two young men. While it was a reason, there was allegedly another reason: The desire to take over her property.

How did she try to kill her mother?

As per reports, the accused first allegedly used sleeping pills to drug Rajalaxmi and then tried to smother her with pillows. The woman was then taken to a hospital where she was declared dead. On the next day, her body was cremated in Bhubaneswar where her relatives were present, and they were informed that she died of a heart attack.

For two weeks, nobody had any clue about what actually happened. Until Siba Prasad Mishra, Rajalaxmi’s brother, found the mobile phone of the girl which she left behind in Bhubaneswar. He examined the device and found Instagram conversations which revealed the murder plan in detail. The chats included specific references to killing Rajalaxmi and taking her cash and gold ornaments. On May 14, the now enlightened Mishra lodged a complaint at Paralakhemundi police station and the following investigation resulted in the arrest of the teenage girl, and her companions Ganesh Rath (21), and Dinesh Sahu (20).

Around 14 years ago, Rajalaxmi and her husband found the infant girl on a roadside in Bhubaneswar and the childless couple adopted her. A year later, Rajalaxmi’s husband passed away, and she raised the girl on her own. She reloacted to Paralakhemundi a few years ago so that her daughter could study at Kendriya Vidyalaya. For that, she even rented a house in town.

There, the girl allegedly got into a relationship with Rath and Sahu, and once Rajalaxmi objected to the relationship, tensions flared up between her and her daughter. As per police, it was Rath who allegedly instigated the girl to murder her mother, convincing her that it would enable them to continue their relationship and gain Rajalaxmi’s property. The murder took place allegedly on the evening of April 29, with the girl making Rajalaxmi unconscious, and then along with Rath and Sahu, smothering Rajalaxmi with pillows.

Not just family members, but the accused also informed hospital staff that she had suffered a heart attack. It was believable, since Rajalaxmi had a prior heart condition. Police stated that the girl had previously given Rath some of Rajalaxmi’s gold ornaments who allegedly pawned them for around Rs 2.4 lakh. Police recovered from the accused about 30 grams of gold ornaments along with three mobile phones and two pillows allegedly used to commit the heinous crime.
