New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday criticised Madhya Pradesh minister Kunwar Vijay Shah for his controversial comments directed at Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had briefed the media on Operation Sindoor — India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, along with Justice AG Masih, expressed disapproval of Shah’s remarks, stating, “Being a constitutional authority, you were expected to exercise restraint, especially in sensitive times like these.”
Although the court agreed to examine Shah’s plea seeking a stay on the FIR filed against him, it refused to pause the proceedings currently underway in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The high court had earlier initiated suo motu action and directed that an FIR be lodged against the BJP leader.
The case stems from a viral video of Shah’s speech, which drew widespread criticism. Reacting to the backlash, the minister insisted that his statements were misunderstood and that his intention had been to appreciate Colonel Qureshi’s bravery.
Speaking to ANI, Shah said, “My roots are in the armed forces. Many of my relatives served and sacrificed their lives for the nation. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who took revenge for our country, is above even my own sister. If anything I said in the heat of the moment caused hurt, I offer my heartfelt apologies—not once, but ten times.”
Reiterating his patriotism, Shah added, “I deeply respect all communities that contribute to the country. I’m not perfect—just a human being. If my words offended anyone, I sincerely apologise.”
