New Delhi: Hours after Naresh Tikait, brother of Bharatiya Kisan Union president Rakesh Tikait criticised the Centre for its decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, the union’s general secretary Mohan Mohan Mishra slammed the statement, calling it ‘anti-national’.
Tikait had earlier slammed the Centre over its move to suspend Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan after the Phalgam terror attack in which 26 innocent civilians were killed on April 22. “This is a wrong decision. The treaty should have continued. We are against this. We are farmers, and every farmer needs water,” Tikait was quoted as saying by AN.
A statement issued by Mishra’s office on Monday said, “All India General Secretary of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, Shri Mohan Mohan Mishra, in his reaction said that the statement of the leaders of the Bharatiya Kisan Union is a support to anti-national forces. Mr. Mishra said that statements supporting a country like Pakistan in the name of such treaties are actually like supporting anti-national forces. It is also a serious matter that the government of the country did not take strict action.”
“General Secretary Mr. Mishra expressed anger and said that such statements encourage terrorists and anti-national forces. The task at this time is to root out the enemies of the country. He said that the farmers of India will oppose the statements of these so-called leaders. Bharatiya Kisan Sangh gives priority to the sentiment of “national interest is paramount” and strongly condemns the statement of Naresh Tikait taking the side of anti-national forces,” the statement added.
Demanding strict action against those supporting ‘anti-national’ forces, it said, “The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh demands that the government investigate and take action against those who support these anti-national forces. These people must also know that the country’s interest is paramount.”
