South 24 Parganas: Communal tension broke out in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas on Tuesday after a group of people allegedly vandalised a temple. The clashes between the people of two communities erupted after a person was stopped from setting up his shop near a Hindu temple.
The incident took place in Maheshtala near Rabindra Nagar Police Station in Budge Budge area. A person also sustained injury after some people threw stones at the temple. To bring the situation under control, a Rapid Action Force (RAF) team was deployed.
Taking to X, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said that the vandalism at the Shiva Temple was unacceptable and urged the police to take strict action against the perpetrators and ensure the restoration of the temple premises. “The disgraceful incident of vandalism at the Shiva Temple in Ward No. 7, Maheshtala, under Metiabruz Assembly constituency, near Rabindra Nagar Police Station is simply unacceptable,” he wrote on X.

Adhikari claimed that the miscreants had illegally encroached upon Temple Committee land and set up shops. On being confronted, they “violently attacked the sacred Tulsi Manch, nearby Hindu shops, homes, and the Temple itself”, he said. “This blatant assault by the hundred of Jehadis on our religious places cannot be tolerated,” the BJP leader said.
He also hit out at the West Bengal police saying that the entire incident took place in their presence yet no action was taken against the miscreants.
“What’s astonishing is that the incident happened at a stone’s throw distance from the Rabindra Nagar Police Station, under the watch of IC Mukul Mia and SDPO Kamrujjaman Molla. The Police simply couldn’t block the vandals and the entire episode happened in the presence of Police,” he said.
He requested DGP Rajeev Kumar to take “immediate and strict” action against the perpetrators and the erring police personnels who “failed to do their duty, ensure the restoration of the Temple premises”. He also urged the senior cop to provide security to the affected residents. “The people of West Bengal, especially the Sanatani Community demand justice and the protection of our places of worship,” he said.
