Stampede near Chinnaswamy: Karnataka HC receives case documents; asks State to keep all communication in chief secretary’s custody

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Friday (June 12) received the documents related to the June 4 stampede incident and directed the State to keep all the official online and offline communication before and after the stampede incident near M Chinnaswamy stadium during victory celebration claiming 11 lives in the custody of the Karnataka chief secretary.

A bench comprising Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice CM Joshi was hearing a suo motu cognisance it had taken on the stampede incident that took place on June 4 near the Chinnaswamy stadium where an event was organised to celebrate maiden title victory of Royal Challenger Bangalore (RCB) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) final.

The State on Thursday submitted all relevant documents in Kannada related to the stampede incident in a sealed cover to the court and Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty, representing the State, assured the bench that the English translation of the documents would be provided in two days.

The bench directed Shetty to also submit the translated documents in a sealed cover and posted the matter for further hearing on June 17.

Shetty earlier requested the court for sealed-envelop submission of documents and the bench had allowed the State to submit the documents in a sealed cover.

Eleven persons lost their lives and 56 were injured in the June 4 stampede incident, as a large number of people thronged to the Chinnaswamy stadium to participate in the RCB team’s IPL victory celebrations.

The High Court, while hearing the matter, earlier observed that when such events take place, there must be an SOP in place and had said that the court is taking cognisance of the incident to ascertain the cause of tragedy and how to prevent such tragedies in future.

In a related development, another bench of the High Court on Thursday ordered interim release of Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of RCB, and three others arrested in connection with the June 4 stampede incident.
