Saharanpur: UP Police detain tandoor worker, eatery owner for ‘spitting’ on rotis

New Delhi: A tandoor worker and an eatery owner were detained by the Uttar Pradesh police in Saharanpur on Wednesday after several persons lodged complaints alleging that the former had been spitting on the rotis before baking them. The police arrested the duo after Bajrang Dal approached the cops on Tuesday with a purported viral video of the incident.

The video, on whose basis the complaint was filed, showed the tandoor worker allegedly spitting on the rotis before putting them for baking.

Superintendent of Police, City, Abhimanyu Manglik was quoted as saying by new agency PTI that the duo was presently being interrogated and action will be taken based on the probe.

Several incidents have come to light from Uttar Pradesh where workers have been allegedly adding spit or human waste in the food served to customers. Following these incidents, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday declared that it will implement a new law targeting sellers who “conceal their identity” or mix human waste and inedible substances into food items and beverages.

Yogi Adityanath’s tough talk

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has averred that prison and fine would be imposed against persons who flout the law. Besides, action taken in response to these offenses will be considered as cognisable and non-bailable. CM Yogi Adityanath dubbed these incidents as “horrific”, which have an adverse impact on social harmony and consumers’ health, according to the release.

To guarantee the purity of food products and to uphold consumer confidence, it is paramount to make stringent laws, Yogi Adityanath said, while instructing officers to chalk out “clear” regulations to check such incidents in hotels, eateries, dhabas, restaurants, and street food stalls.

Speaking at a meeting, Yogi Adityanath pointed out that all outlets of food should have adequate number of CCTV cameras installed to ensure there are no wrongdoings, especially in the kitchen and dining zones. He stated that footage should be made available on demand by the district administration at all times for at last one month.
