On the night of 8 May, Pakistan launched a series of drone and missile attacks targeting multiple Indian states, including Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Punjab. Pakistan’s attacks came after recent Indian precision strikes against 9 terrorist camps located within Pakistan and PoK.
Despite Pakistan’s continuous attacks, Indian forces stood brave and the IAF managed to effectively down the Pakistani attack.
Apart from our brave soldiers, the S-400, or the Sudarshan Chakra as we commonly call it, played a huge role in securing our borders on the night of drone and missile attacks.
HOW S-400 EMERGED AS A HERO IN INDIA’S AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM
The S-400, a sophisticated long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system manufactured in Russia, proved instrumental in averting a potential major crisis. S-400s advanced capabilities played a critical role in preventing significant loss of life and property damage. The system boasts a remarkable 600km radar detection range, allowing for early identification and tracking of potential threats.
It integrates a suite of multi-function radars, including the 92N6E Grave Stone and 96L6 Cheese Board, providing 360-degree surveillance.
HOW EFFECTIVE IS S-400
It was the night of May 8 when S-400 was tested to its full capability and passed with glorious marks. The S-400 track up to 300 targets and engage up to 36 targets simultaneously. The S-400 employs four different missile types which come with different ranges to counter a multiple threats.
The 40N6 missile, with a range of up to 400km, targets high-value assets at long distances. The 48N6 provides medium-range coverage (up to 250km), while the 9M96E and 9M96E2 missiles offer short to medium-range capabilities (40-120km).
These missiles are capable of engaging targets at speeds up to Mach 14 and altitudes ranging from 10 metres to 30 kilometers.
S-400 CAN BE REPOSITIONED & DEPLOYED EASILY
The S-400’s high mobility allows for rapid deployment and repositioning, making it a highly adaptable and effective defensive asset. Notably, the s-400 can become operational within five minutes while moving and within 35 seconds from standby. Its robust design incorporates electronic protection measures to counter jamming and stealth technologies, crucial in modern warfare environments.
BEST DEFENCE INVESTMENT UNDER MODI GOVT
India has procured a total of five squadrons of the Russian-made S-400 Triumf air defence missile system, in a $5 billion deal with Russia in October 2018. Currently, three squadrons are deployed and two more expected to be delivered by 2026.
