New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday hit out at RSS’ general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale after he called for reviewing the words “socialist” and “secular” in the Preamble of the Constitution, and alleged that the RSS-BJP’s ideology stands in “direct opposition” to the Indian Constitution. Hosabale sparked a political slugfest for saying that the fate of the two words should be decided through debate.

“The thinking of the RSS-BJP is anti-constitutional. Now, RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale has demanded a change in the preamble of the Constitution. This is a conspiracy to destroy Baba Saheb’s Constitution, which the RSS-BJP has been hatching for long,” the Congress said in a post on X.

The party further said that it will never allow the BJP-RSS “conspiracy” to succeed and will oppose any such move. It also alleged that when the Constitution was adopted, the RSS not only rejected it but also burnt its copies.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological mentor of the ruling BJP, on Thursday sought to remove the words “socialist” and “secular” in the Preamble of the Constitution and said that they were never part of the Constitution drafted by BR Ambedkar and were added during the Emergency.

Speaking at an event in Delhi organised on the 50th anniversary of Emergency, Hosabale said, “The preamble of the Constitution, Baba Saheb Ambedkar never had these words. During the Emergency, when fundamental rights were suspended, Parliament did not work, the judiciary became lame, then these two words Secular and Socialist were added to the Constitution. These two words were not part of the original Preamble. So, whether they should remain in the preamble should be considered.” The RSS leaders also said that discussions were held on this issue later, but no effort was made to remove them from the preamble.
