Kolkata: A special court on Tuesday (September 3) remanded former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Dr Sandip Ghosh and three others to eight-day Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody in alleged financial irregularities during his tenure at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where a woman doctor was raped and murder on August 9.

The special CBI court sent Ghosh and others to the CBI custody on an application by the CBI seeking their custody to interrogate them in connection with alleged financial misconduct.

The CBI arrested Ghosh on Monday. The agency earlier questioned Ghosh for several days in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during his tenure as principal.

High Court transferred probe into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital during his tenure as principal to CBI

The Calcutta High Court earlier transferred the matter related to the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during Ghosh’s tenure from the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the West Bengal government, to the CBI on a plea by filed by Akhtar Ali, who is the former deputy superintendent, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, seeking an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into financial irregularities allegedly committed during the tenure of Ghosh as the principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

CBI is also investigating rape, murder of woman doctor

The CBI is also conducting an investigation into the rape and murder of 31-year-old woman doctor inside the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024.

Calcutta High Court earlier transferred probe to CBI

The High Court earlier had transferred the investigation of the rape and murder of the woman doctor from the Kolkata Police to the CBI while hearing a bunch of pleas seeking a court-monitored investigation of the incident. The pleas before the High Court also sought an investigation into the conduct of the hospital authorities, including the role of Ghosh, the then principal of the medical college, and other officials by a special team of investigating officers.

The Supreme Court has taken a suo motu cognisance of the incident of rape and murder of the woman doctor and is currently seized of the matter.
