New Delhi: As the police launched an investigation into the rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, it has been found that the perpetrator identified as Sanjay Roy has been involved in several frauds.
The victim, a second-year student in the chest medicine department, was found semi-nude and bearing multiple injuries inside the hospital’s seminar hall. A preliminary autopsy report indicated sexual abuse before her murder, confirming the father’s allegation that she was raped and murdered within the hospital’s walls.
A fake cop with a dark past and a path of deception
The alleged perpetrator, Sanjay Roy, was arrested after a thorough investigation revealed his suspicious activities. It turned out that Roy was not a real police officer, but a civic volunteer who had been able to infiltrate the hospital’s security system and gain access to multiple departments. This access was achieved through his role in the police welfare board, where he was tasked with assisting officers with various tasks, including traffic management and disaster response on a monthly allowance of rupees 12000.

With a fake identity of a cop, Roy was able to infiltrate the hospital and exploit its resources raising serious concerns about the potential for other individuals with malicious intent to do the same. Despite not being recruited as a policeman, he would introduce himself as a Kolkata Police personnel with Kolkata Police (KP) inscribed on his T-shirt. He also had a KP sticker on his bike.
Roy was charging patients for admission and beds at hospitals
However, Roy’s true nature was far from altruistic. He exploited his position to exploit patients and their families, charging them for admission and beds at the hospital and nearby nursing homes. This unscrupulous behavior was facilitated by his ability to convincingly portray himself as a real police officer, wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the Kolkata Police insignia and even using a motorcycle adorned with a “KP” tag. This deception allowed him to gain access to the police barracks and blend in with the real officers, further fueling his façade.
A History of Troubled Relationships and a Trail of Broken Lives
Adding to the chilling nature of the crime, reports surfaced that Roy had a history of failed marriages and inappropriate behaviour towards women within the hospital. This pattern of troubling behavior coupled with his deception and exploitation, has raised serious questions about how a man with such a troubled past was able to gain access to a vulnerable environment like a hospital and operate unchecked for so long.
