New Delhi: Three calls were received by the parents of the 31-year-old junior doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9 after the incident, according to an NDTV report on Thursday.
These three calls were made from the hospital in a span of just half an hour on August 9 morning. And the callers did not reveal what exactly had happened to their daughter.
The first caller has been identified as the assistant superintendent of RG Kar Hospital. In the first call, she tells the parents, “Her condition is very bad, can you please come as soon as possible.” The victim’s father asks: “Please tell us what has happened.” The mother says: “What happened to her, she was on duty.”
The second call was made by a male. The caller asks if they were coming to the hospital, to which the parents respond, “Yes, we are coming. How is she now?” The caller tells the parents to come to the to RG Kar Hospital’s chest department HOD.
In the third call made by the assistant superintendent, the parents are told, “Your daughter has probably died by suicide. She is dead, police are here, we are all here, please come immediately.”
The way the doctor’s death was communicated to their parents has come under the scrutiny of both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. The parents had told the high court that they were kept waiting for three hours at the hospital and suspect this was done intentionally.
No formal police complaint was filed by the hospital administration, headed by then principal Dr Sandip Ghosh. The Kolkata Police registered a case of unnatural death. It was only late in the night of August 9 that an FIR was filed following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s father.
Sandip Ghosh was lambasted by the Supreme Court for trying to pass off the murder and rape as a suicide.
