Key developments in the case

The central agency recent findings emerged after the interrogation of Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, who was arrested for allegedly tampering with evidence. Mondal, along with Dr Sandip Ghosh, the hospital’s former chief, is currently in CBI custody.

Both were presented in court on Wednesday and have been placed in judicial custody until September 30. The agency has also arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, who was caught on CCTV entering the room where the junior doctor’s body was found.

The CBI has linked Mondal, Ghosh, and Roy in a suspected conspiracy, pointing out the delay in seizing Roy’s clothing, which may have led to contamination of evidence. Apart from that, Mondal is accused of participating in a possible cover-up, though he is not charged with the actual rape or murder.

Protest and probe continue

The investigation has drawn scrutiny towards the West Bengal government and police force, with allegations of protecting the culprits. The CBI is also looking into why there was a 14-hour delay between the discovery of the body and the filing of a police complaint. Meanwhile, junior doctors who have been protesting since August 9 have partially resumed duties for emergency services. However, they maintain their demand for justice and the removal of certain officials, threatening to continue their protest if necessary.
