Kolkata: New information has come to light about why the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will be conducting a polygraph test on former Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and four other staffers in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the hospital premises.
The CBI brought Ghosh and four other doctors who were on duty on August 9, the day of the horrific incident, to a special court to request permission to conduct lie detector tests on them.
Besides Ghosh, these comprise two first-year post-graduate doctors, a housekeeping staff and one hospital intern.
Why CBI is conducting the polygraph test?
According to sources the agency personnel have found fingerprints of two doctors in the seminar room where the woman trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered. Furthermore, housekeeping staff were seen in CCTV footage moving from the first-floor emergency room to the third floor at the time of the incident on August 9. The probe also revealed that the intern was spotted talking to the victim on the third floor.
The CBI has also obtained some additional medical reports and wants to confirm the statements of the individuals involved. Although these people do not appear to be directly involved in the incident, the CBI aims to determine whether they tampered with evidence or were part of any other conspiracy.
CBI puts together sequence of events
According to sources, the timeline of the events on the night of August 9 is as follows according to the probe conducted till now
- The victim and two first-year students, Arka and Soumitra, had dinner together at midnight.
- They then went to the seminar room, where they stayed until around 1:30-2:00 AM, watching Neeraj Chopra’s javelin final at the Paris Olympics.
- Opposite to the seminar room is a sleeping room where doctors rest. A polysomnography test was ongoing that night, which concluded around 1:30-2:00 AM. Afterwards, Arka and Soumitra went to the sleep room, while the victim stayed in the seminar room to rest.
- Golam mentioned going to the third floor at 2:45 AM, while Subhadeep stated he was in the intern room. All three rooms (seminar hall, sleep room, and intern room) are located on the third floor and are close to each other.
- The CBI found some inconsistencies in the statements of the four individuals, which is why the agency wants to conduct polygraph tests.
On Thursday, the CBI informed the Supreme Court that the local police attempted to cover up the rape and murder of the postgraduate medical student by altering the crime scene before the federal agency took over the investigation.
The rape and murder of the junior doctor in a seminar hall at the hospital have ignited widespread protests. The medic’s body, bearing severe injury marks, was discovered inside the seminar hall of the hospital’s chest department on the morning of August 9. A civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police was arrested the following day.
On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which began its probe on August 14.
