Dehradun: Five elephants from Rajaji Park have migrated to Himachal’s Kalesar National Park, while 12 have been camping in Paonta, a border area between Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. According to experts, these elephants migrate towards Himachal from Rajaji Park in search of a safe habitat.
The herd of elephants that reached Kalesar consists of one male, two females, and two baby elephants. The migration of elephants from Rajaji National Park is not new. A year and a half ago, a group of six elephants from Rajaji reached Kalesar and later returned.

Due to the permanent migration of elephants from Uttarakhand, the Central Government has provided a budget of Rs 87 lakh to Paonta Sahib under Project Elephant. About one and a half years ago, a group of elephants had also returned after going up to Kalesar.
A five-member herd was spotted in Kalesar
In the last few days, a group of elephants has been seen roaming in the forests of Kalesar many times. According to Leelu Ram, inspector of the wildlife department of Yamunanagar, a herd of elephants with two babies, along with one male and two female elephants, was seen in Kalesar National Park about three to four times.

It is speculated that the elephants have come to Kalesar in search of a safe habitat. The dense forest in Kalesar National Park provides a favorable environment for the elephants, so they frequently move from Rajaji National Park to Kalesar.
Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary and Sher Jung National Park, located in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, are connected to Rajaji National Park through a corridor of dense forest. Due to this, elephants easily migrate from Rajaji to Kalesar Park. Deputy Director of Rajaji National Park Mahatim Yadav said that a herd of elephants keeps moving from Rajaji National Park to Kalesar National Park. Last year, a herd had gone to Kalesar and later returned. A herd has stayed in Paonta Sahib, and the forest department is continuously working for their protection.
