Visakhapatnam: In a ruling that highlights the importance of basic amenities on trains, The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission-I (Visakhapatnam), Andhra Pradesh, has ordered South Central Railway (SCR) to compensate a passenger Rs 25,000 for a “distressing” journey on the Tirumala Express.

The decision was based on the passenger’s complaint of inadequate water supply, non-functional air conditioning in the toilets, and an unhygienic environment during his trip from Tirupati to Visakhapatnam, The Times of India reported.

V Murthy, 55, a resident of Vizag City, had booked four 3AC tickets for a comfortable journey with his family. However, their trip turned into an ordeal when they encountered issues with the toilets, which he claimed led to their physical and mental distress. Murthy, despite complaining to the railway authorities at Duvvada, received no resolution.

The commission, in its verdict, acknowledged the railways’ admission of a technical issue causing an air-lock, disrupting water flow in the toilets. This confirmed that the train had departed without ensuring basic amenities.

The commission ruled that since the railways collect fares with the promise of a safe and comfortable journey, they are obligated to provide essential facilities like water in toilets, air conditioning, and a clean environment.

The commission also ordered the railways to pay an additional Rs 5,000 to Murthy to cover legal costs, bringing the total compensation to Rs 30,000.
