
Pune: In a shocking incident reported from Pune, 12 students were injured after a car rammed a tea stall where they were enjoying their evening tea and snacks. Those injured are said to be civil service aspirants. The driver of the car was reportedly drunk, said a report in NDTV. He lost control of his car and hit people standing on the side of the road.
Driver, co-passenger arrested
An FIR was filed in the matter and police have arrested 3 people in the case. Those arrested include, the vehicle owner, the driver and co-passenger of the car. The incident happened near Bhave High School in Sadashiv Peth, on Saturday evening, said police officials.
Explaining the chain of events the police said , “At around 5:30 pm, a group of students who are preparing for the Maharashtra Public Service Commission exam were on a tea break, at the roadside tea stall. The accident, which has been captured on CCTV, happened when the white Hyundai Aura drove straight into the students, throwing them to the ground.
There were at least 5 students who were standing at the stall, who were moved out of the camera frame soon after the car hit them. Next came wailing sounds and people standing nearby rushed in to help the injured. The traffic was halted and several people ran towards the car to rescue students, who were probably stuck under the wheels of the car.
The crowd swelled and soon after the driver of the car and a co-passenger were pulled out and thrashed by the public. 12 students were injured in the accident, of whom 4 are said to be severely injured. They have been admitted to the Sancheti Hospital. Those admitted here have reportedly suffered fractures to their arms and legs. The other students are being treated at Yogesh Hospital.
Driver was drunk: Police
Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the vehicle was drunk. He has been identified as 27-year-old Jairam Shivaji Mule. Nikhil Pingle, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Pune was quoted by NDTV as saying, “Driver Jairam Mule, co-passenger Rahul Gosavi and car owner Digambar Yadav have been arrested. We are investigating and will take strict action against the accused.”
The police are investigating the case and appropriate action, based on law, will be taken against the accused, said officials.
