Premier League 2024/25: Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to claim London derby

New Delhi: Tottenham Hotspur staged an impressive second-half comeback to secure a commanding victory over West Ham United, overcoming an early setback to win 3-1 in a high-octane London derby. Ange Postecoglou’s side was still reeling from their previous collapse at Brighton showcased their resilience and attacking prowess after going behind to a Mohammed Kudus strike.

Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min starred in the Spurs’ resurgence with both players getting on the scoresheet and playing pivotal roles in an own goal that sealed the result. The match saw tempers flare in the dying minutes as Kudus was shown a red card for a rash challenge, leaving West Ham with little to salvage from a tough afternoon.

Early Lead…

West Ham struck and took an early lead after just 18 minutes. Jarrod Bowen caused trouble down the right flank, beating Destiny Udogie far too easily before delivering a clever ball across the box. Despite some early pressure from Spurs, Bowen kept the attack alive after being blocked, with the help of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and found Mohammed Kudus at the back post.

Kudus left unmarked, smashed the ball past Guglielmo Vicario to make it 1-0 scoring his second goal of the season. Spurs tried to respond quickly with Pedro Porro’s deflected strike almost beating Alphonse Areola but the West Ham goalkeeper pulled off a brilliant save. However, moments later Dejan Kulusevski found the breakthrough and levelled the scoreline just before half-time.

Spurs take control in the second half

Tottenham’s resurgence began just seven minutes after the break when Destiny Udogie set up Yves Bissouma, who calmly slotted the ball home to put Spurs ahead. Moments later the hosts doubled their advantage in chaotic fashion as Alphonse Areola’s attempted save from Son Heung-min’s shot rebounded off West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo resulting in an own goal.

Tottenham’s captain Son soon added to the tally with a well-timed run that beat the offside trap in the 60th minute. He showcased his skill with a series of stepovers before firing into the near post narrowly missing out on another goal minutes later when his effort hit the post.

West Ham’s frustration peaked late on when in the 86th minute Mohammed Kudus was sent off after a VAR review showed him striking two Spurs players during a heated altercation. With this convincing 3-1 win Spurs climbed to sixth spot in the standings while West Ham remained stuck in 14th place.

Son Heung-min was the standout performer for Tottenham Hotspur with a dazzling display in their 4-1 victory over West Ham. The Spurs captain was instrumental in the second-half surge as he contributed to the third goal with his relentless pressure and intelligent positioning. His shot though initially tame forced a crucial mistake as Alphonse Areola pushed it against Jean-Clair Todibo leading to an own goal.

Son’s brilliance continued as he netted Tottenham’s fourth goal showcasing his trademark flair with a series of stepovers before drilling the ball past Areola at the near post. His attacking influence was evident with one goal from four total shots and an impressive 0.28 xG, cementing his impact on a dominant performance.
