Post-Diwali detox: 5 simple ways to recover faster from the festive sugar rush

New Delhi: Diwali is over but the festive hangover lingers on. The festival of lights left many with memories and unfortunately for some of us, some extra kilos and sugar rush might take some time to get rid of. With Diwali coming to an end this year, doctors recommend making the right dietary and lifestyle choices to take a much-needed break from the unhealthy binge that the festive season is all about. Suppose you have been dealing with constipation and bloating, acidity or stomach ache after having eaten mindlessly. In that case, it is advised to give the digestive system a break from sweet, calorie-dense, deep-fried food.

Take a look at the top 5 expert-recommended tips to detox and recover from the Diwali sugar rush.

  1. Lemon water every morning: For at least a week, it is recommended to start the day with a tall glass of warm lemon water. Do not add any sugar or sweetener to it and it will help you rid the body of the toxins faster.
  2. Avoid artificial sugar: Artificial sugar should be avoided for at least 1-2 weeks after Diwali. It is advised to refrain from sodas, baked goods, sweets and other unhealthy foods so that the body can get ample time to recover from the burden of excess calories.
  3. Drink lots of water: Drinking water is one of the most important parts of a detox regimen. Drink 8-9 glasses of water in a day to keep the body hydrated and also to give it enough fluid to flush out toxins through sweat and urine.
  4. Go plant-based: Eat plant-based foods and take a break from meat to reduce the pressure on your digestive system. Plant-based foods are easier to digest and they save the digestive tract from inflammation.
  5. Eat more fibre: Sugary foods and sweets of Diwali are mostly fats and calories and almost no fibre. Therefore, one must try to include more fibre in the diet in the form of vegetables, nuts, whole grains, green vegetables and fruits.
