New Delhi: The long-discussed concept of ‘One Nation, One Election’ may soon come into effect, as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) plans to introduce the Bill during its current term in power. The development comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi approaches the first 100 days of his third consecutive term, having taken his oath on June 9, five days after the Lok Sabha election results were announced, India Today reported citing sources.

The One Nation, One Election proposal has been a key feature of the BJP’s Lok Sabha election manifesto. During his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, the Prime Minister urged the country to unite in support of the simultaneous election legislation. “I request everyone to come together to achieve the resolve of ‘One Nation, One Election’, which is the need of the hour, ” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister said, “I have always maintained that elections should be held only for three or four months. Politics should not be practiced throughout the entire five-year term,” adding that this approach would “reduce logistics expenses. ” The PM added, “We have established a commission, and its report has been received. We are currently analysing the report and actionable points will emerge from this study. Our commitment is not just political. It is crucial for the country. ”

Panel pushes for One Nation, One Election

In March this year, a high-level committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind suggested that simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies be implemented as an initial step. The committee also recommended that local body elections should take place within 100 days to achieve a synchronised election cycle nationwide.

\However, the panel did not outline a specific timeline for the implementation of simultaneous polls. At present, elections for state assemblies and the Lok Sabha are conducted separately, either after the five-year term of the existing government ends or if the government is dissolved for various reasons.
