New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday chaired the 10th governing council meeting of Niti Aayog at Bharat Mandapam. The main theme of this important meeting was ‘Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat @2047’, focusing on the vision of developing strong states to build a developed India by the year 2047.
The Governing Council is the highest decision-making body of Niti Aayog. It includes all the chief ministers of Indian states, lieutenant governors of Union Territories, and several Union ministers. Prime Minister Modi serves as the chairman of Niti Aayog.
This meeting is the first major gathering of the Prime Minister with all the chief ministers and lieutenant governors after Operation Sindoor, a key initiative launched earlier.
Earlier, Niti Aayog’s statement said the focus of the meeting was to encourage states to create bold and inclusive vision documents for their development. These visions should align with national priorities but also take local needs into account. States are expected to set time-bound targets to track progress effectively.
Generally, the full Governing Council meeting is held annually. Last year, it took place on July 27, while the first-ever meeting was held on February 8, 2015.
The meeting comes at a challenging time for the Indian economy. Recently, the US government, under President Donald Trump, imposed retaliatory tariffs on Indian products, causing trade tensions. Despite these challenges, India’s growth rate for the current financial year is still expected to be between 6.2% and 6.7%.
However, international agencies like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank have lowered their growth forecasts for India to 6.2% and 6.3% respectively, citing global uncertainties and trade issues.
In 2024, 10 states and Union Territories did not participate, highlighting some political challenges.
Niti Aayog is preparing a detailed long-term vision to transform India’s economy into a $30 trillion economy by 2047. The Governing Council meeting plays a crucial role in bringing states together to contribute to this ambitious national goal.
