New Delhi: Pakistan Army violated ceasefire for the 10th straight day on the intervening night of May 3-4, 2025. According to the Indian Army, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked small arms fire across the LoC, The areas targeted included the Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajauri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.
Cross border firings increased after Pahalgam attack
The Indian Army said that its troops responded promptly and proportionately to the firings by Pakistan. This is the 10th incident of overnight firing by Pakistan troops on Indian posts. These firings began soon after the April 22, Pahalgam attack. The attack on common people, mostly tourists, left 26 people dead.
Tensions have risen between the 2 neighbours (India and Pakistan) ever since the attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The unprovoked firings by the Pakistan Army along the international border, have only escalated the tense situation between the 2 nuclear-armed nations.
India vowed to take strong action against the terrorists involved in the killings. PM Narendra Modi, speaking at a public function said that India will hunt down and punish the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack. The country also took measures like closing the Attari border and suspending the Indus Water Treaty in wake of the Pahalgam attack. All Pakistani nationals living in India were asked to leave at the earliest. India also asked several Pakistan diplomats, including Defence Attaches working at the Pakistan Embassy in New Delhi to leave.
Pakistan meanwhile has denied its involvement in the Pahalgam attack. PM Shehbaz Sharif called for a neutral investigation into the attack, which was denied by India. In response to the steps taken by the Indian government after the terror attack, Pakistan suspended the Simla Agreement.
