New Delhi: The Indian Army has said that the incident in which a soldier lost his life at Sunjuwan military station in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning was not a terrorist attack. The reason behind his death is being investigated.
“Initial investigations by the Indian Army suggest that the incident in which a soldier lost his life in the morning is not a terrorist attack. The cause of the death of the soldier is being investigated,” Army officials said on Monday as per an ANI report.
It was reported earlier that the soldier suffered injuries during a gunfight at Jammu’s Sunjuwan military station on Monday morning. As per reports in the morning, Jammu Army Base was sealed and a search operation by the Army and other security forces was carried out to track the suspected terrorists.
Police had said the special operations group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the army had started a joint operation. “Some firing shots were heard outside the base near Sunjuwan military station, resulting in an army jawan sustaining injuries. A search operation is underway. Details are awaited,” a police spokesperson had reportedly said.
On February 10, 2018, Pakistan-backed terrorists had targeted Sunjuwan brigade, the largest military base in Jammu city. Six soldiers and a civilian lost their lives in the attack.
The Sunjuwan brigade headquarters is on the Jammu-Kunjwani bypass which is part of the national highway to Srinagar. Hugely populated localities of Bhatindi, Jalalabad, Abotabad, and Chowadhi surround the army base.
Today’s incident – which was ruled out as a terrorist attack in the evening by the Army — had raised alarm because it came just a fortnight before the first phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir on September 18. Many prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, defence minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi will be addressing poll rallies in the region in the days to come.
