New Delhi: Raman Kirpal, the Editor-in-Chief of Newslaundry, has apologised after he made a controversial comment on the Nainital rape incident last week.
Kirpal had recently stirred the hornet’s nest by downplaying the rape of a minor girl in Nainital by a 65-year-old Muslim man as an ‘affair’ and ‘small incident.’
He had made the comments during the course of a podcast on the outlet, which was taken down after being called out on social media.
As the public outcry became intense, both Kirpal and Newslaundry were forced to tender an apology. The outlet also edited the video podcast and reuploaded it on its platform.
“I want to sincerely apologise for making an inadvertent mistake in describing the Nainital incident involving the sexual assault of a minor. I deeply regret my words. As an editor and journalist, it was my responsibility to be fully informed before making any statements,” Kirpal said in a post on X.
