Calling the decision of non-serving of non-vegetarian items and food items containing onion/garlic unprecedented, the lawyers had said that non-serving of non-vegetarian or food with onion-garlic to cater to the wishes of a few is not in keeping with the pluralist traditions of the SCBA and SCAORA and would result in lack of respect for each other.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court canteen started serving the non-vegetarian items from today (October 4) following protest by some advocates objecting to non-serving of meat items and food items containing onion/garlic at its canteen due to the ongoing Navratras.

Some advocates raised questions on non-serving of food items during Navratras

Some advocates of the Supreme Court had written to presidents of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) raising questions on non-serving of non-vegetarian food items and food items containing onion and garlic during Navratras.

According to a Livelaw, the Supreme Court canteen, following the protest by some lawyers, served the meat items on Friday.

This is unprecedented, will also set a very wrong precedent for the future, lawyers wrote to SCBA, SCAORA presidents

“We are writing to you in the context of the Supreme Court canteen serving only Navratra food during the ongoing Navratra festival which started from today. Lawyers in the Supreme Court have been observing the Navratra festival all along. They would bring from home their special food from home for the 9 days without any fuss. For the first time this year the Supreme Court canteen has announced that it will only serve Navratra food. This is not only unprecedented and will also set a very wrong precedent for the future.”

Non-serving of non-veg or onion-garlic food to cater to wishes of a few is not in keeping with our pluralist traditions: Lawyers

“The Supreme Court canteen caters to all. We are all dependent on it. Non-serving of non-vegetarian or food with onion-garlic to cater to the wishes of a few is not in keeping with our pluralist traditions and would result in lack of respect for each other. Once this is allowed, it will open the flood gates to a lot of other impositions as well,” a letter by lawyers dated October 3 addressed to the president, SCBA and SCAORA said.

The letter further said, “While we have no objection or on the contrary be happy if the canteen, in addition to its normal menu, also provide the Navtarta food to those observing it, it should not be imposed on others” and requested the presidents of the SCBA and SCAORA to ask the canteen to provide its normal menu.
