NHRC takes cognisance of violence, to send team for on-spot inquiry

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken note of the violence that occurred in Murshidabad, West Bengal, during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. On Tuesday, the NHRC announced it would send a team to conduct an on-site inquiry due to the “seriousness” of the situation. This decision follows the submission of a complaint to the commission. The NHRC stated that the inquiry report should be submitted within three weeks. The complaint refers to various social media news articles that highlight the alleged murder of a father and son during the ongoing protests against the legislation.

In the aftermath of this violence, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals, authorities have taken strict actions. Around 1,093 social media accounts have been blocked and 221 individuals who were involved in spreading misinformation and inciting unrest were arrested. Reports have also shown that Bangladeshi radicals may have been aided by local leaders of a political party to carry out the violence.
