Mumbai: A man reportedly died while trying to rescue a girl who had fallen into an open drain. The incident was reported from Ghatkopar in Mumbai, reported NDTV. Police said that the 28-year-old got stuck inside as he was trying to help the girl get out of the drain.
Girl fell inside while trying to retrieve a ball: Police
Police said that an 8-year-old girl fell inside the drain, while she was trying to retrieve a ball that had fallen in it. The foot of the child reportedly slipped and she lost balance, landing straight inside the drain. Due to the depth of the drain, she could not get out, said police officials.
She then started shouting for help. The 28-year-old man who is a labourer by profession was passing by, and heard her screams. He immediately stepped inside the drain to rescue the child. The man was identified as Shahzad Shaikh. He stepped inside the drain to rescue the girl.
He handed over the girl to another man standing outside on the road, thus managing to save the girl’s life. He then tried to get out of the drain, but could not push himself to climb up and drowned, said police.
A team of the Pantnagar Police Station and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot after getting information regarding the drowning. Though Shaikh was moved to a hospital, doctors declared him dead. Police have registered an Alternative Dispute Resolution and investigations are on in the case.
